The etymology of the name Capri derives from the Latin Caprae (Goats) . Its first settlements date back to the Paleolithic when Capri was connected to the mainland through the Lattari mountains, which connected Sorrento to Capri. The island was inhabited by the Greeks and then by the Romans and became the home of great emperors, Augustus and Tiberius , who built their own villas to stay there.
After the fall of the empire it became part of the Duchy of Naples, over the years it suffered raids by the Saracens, Lombards, Normans, Angevins, Aragonese and Spaniards. Between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the island experienced a great period of political and artistic ferment, hosting artists, writers and philosophers from all over the world.
