Founded by the Greeks in 700 'BC after the Greek colonization.

According to a legend, the founder of the city was Parthenope , a Greek girl in love with the Athenian hero Cimon. Parthenope had been betrothed to another man but she, in love with Cimon, decided to escape with him from Greece, landing directly in the Gulf of Naples. Parthenope gave birth to twelve children, becoming the mother of the Neapolitan people , according to legend, Parthenope never died and still lives next to her people.
