Matera is the oldest city in the world!

Its urban settlement has had continuity since prehistoric times up to the present day. Considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is the European Capital of Culture in 2019. Nicknamed "City of Stones", it takes its name from its districts (Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso). Dug into the tuff, Matera is unique in its urban genre worldwide.
